Have you ever been in the middle of a design project and suddenly realised you’ve spent an hour experimenting with some new Photoshop effect or trying out every brush in Procreate, only to find yourself nowhere closer to finishing the actual work? I’ve been there too—and trust me, you’re not alone.
I still remember my lecturer in college, who used to say, “Don’t get distracted by the bells and whistles.” At first, I thought he was just talking about Photoshop tools (and maybe he was), but over time, I realised it was more than that. It was a life lesson wrapped up in a design analogy—the kind of wisdom that sticks with you, like the smell of coffee on a chilly morning.
Here’s the thing: As freelancers, creatives, and dreamers, our lives are full of bells and whistles. Every day, we’re bombarded with noise—from gurus who tell you what absolutely works to that shiny new AI tool promising to revolutionize your workflow. And let’s not forget the Instagram algorithm whispering in your ear, Post more! Reels! Stories! Hashtags!
It’s exhausting, isn’t it?
But here’s what I’ve learned: the magic doesn’t live in the noise. It’s found in the quiet moments when you simplify, when you focus on what really matters. Just like that design project you’re working on, where stripping away unnecessary effects makes the concept shine, your business—and your life—thrives when you slow down and shut out the chaos.
When we’re overwhelmed by too many choices, it’s easy to think we’re not doing enough. So, we hustle harder. We add more to our plates. We sign up for courses, try every marketing hack, and explore tools we might use someday. But all this does is spread us thin, like trying to make a loaf of bread with too little dough.
AI is one of my favourite tools (hello, productivity boost!), but even that can pull us off track if we’re not intentional. If you’re spending hours experimenting with prompts instead of solving the problem you set out to address, that’s a bell you need to silence.
Here’s my advice for today: Shut the noise down. Take a step back. You don’t need to hustle harder; you need to hustle smarter. Simplify your choices. What’s one thing you can focus on right now that will actually move the needle?
And let me tell you, slow and steady isn’t boring—it’s powerful. Gradual growth lets you build something that lasts. Think about it: Would you rather sprint and burn out, or pace yourself and actually enjoy the journey? Slow is best. It’s where clarity lives.
As creatives, we’re often drawn to new trends, tools, and techniques. And while there’s nothing wrong with experimenting, remember this: your best work doesn’t come from using everything. It comes from using the right things, intentionally.
So, how do you actually quiet the noise and do your best creative work?
1. Audit Your Distractions
Take a hard look at what’s pulling you away from your deep work. Social media? The latest AI tools? The pressure to keep up with everyone else? Identify your biggest distractions and set boundaries. (Yes, that might mean muting a few “hustle culture” accounts.)
2. Pick One Thing & Go All In
Not ten things. One. One project, one skill, one offer—whatever actually moves your business forward. Put on your blinders and go all in. The rest? It can wait.
3. Unsubscribe from the Hustle
More doesn’t always mean better. More courses, more tools, more strategies—if it’s overwhelming you, it’s not helping you. Simplify your workflow and trust that slow, intentional progress beats rushed chaos every time.
4. Create Before You Consume
Before you scroll, before you research, before you “just check” what everyone else is doing—create first. Whether it’s writing, designing, brainstorming, or dreaming—give your own ideas space before outside noise gets a say.
So today, give yourself permission to quiet the noise. Take one step forward, not twenty. Focus on the project that lights you up, the client who values you, or even just a moment of rest to refill your creative well. You’re building something beautiful—don’t let the bells and whistles distract you from the melody.
Because in the end, your life, your creativity, and your business? They’re all yours to design. And you don’t need every tool in the toolbox or every new hack to do so—just the ones that work for you.
Let’s toast to shutting out the noise, one intentional choice at a time. Cheers to slow, steady, and stunning growth.
